Came across a strange Windows 8 / Google Chrome bug this morning.

If you pin Google Chrome executable (C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe) to the Start Screen, it vanishes as soon as the browser is closed. Actual shortcut stays in %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs. If you try to pin Google Chrome again, it creates a second shortcut copy and so on, but the tile from Start screen keeps disappearing.

This is how I managed to keep it stick:

  1. Navigate to %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and create a new shortcut to
C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe (depending on your system and settings chrome.exe may be installed in different location)
  2. Rename your shortcut to "Google Chrome" (or however you want it to appear on Start Screen)
  3. Go to Start Screen search (WIN+Q) and search for "Google Chrome" (name you have chosen in step 2)
  4. Right click on "Google Chrome" and Pin to Start

Pin Google Chrome to Windows 8 Start Screen
