The issue was caused by NTLM v1 being disabled in the Synology DSM v7 update. Konica Minolta BizHub C224e does support  NTLM v2, so the issue was resolved by enabling  NTLM v2 in the photocopier Web Admin GUI > Network > SMB Settings > Client Settings > SMB Authentication Setting.
