Transferring iPhone Camera Roll pictures to Windows 7 PC

Pictures taken with iPhone's camera are pretty much the only files you can transfer from iPhone to a Windows 7 computer without installing iTunes or any other additional software. Simply connect your iPhone to a PC via USB cable, open My Computer and couple of seconds later Apple iPhone will appear under Portable Devices

Apple iPhone under Portable Devices in Windows 7

To transfer pictures use one of these methods:

  • Navigate to Apple iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM and drag images to a folder on your computer.
  • Right click on Apple iPhone, click on Import Pictures and Videos and follow the wizard.

Sometimes, you may find that Apple iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM folder is empty even when you have plenty of images in your Camera Roll on the iPhone.
And when you try using the second method (Import Pictures and Videos wizard) you get message "No new pictures or videos were found on this device"

Import Pictures and Videos Wizard > No new pictures or videos were found on this device

This happens when your iPhone is locked. To resolve simply disconnect the USB cable, unlock the iPhone and connect it again.

Once your phone is unlocked, you gotta try all the different USB ports on your computer. Only 1 of 4 ports would recognize that there were pics on my phone.

Thanks for the much-needed tip! Saved me a lot of frustration.
# VIctoria 2015-07-17 19:14
It didn't work for me. Is there something else to try if the internal storage folder is still empty?
# Anna 2015-07-16 19:10
The only thing I've been able to do successfully is manually navigate to the folders when hooked up to the computer and copy or cut them from there in window's explorer:

Apple iPhone--> Internal Storage--> DCIM

But i'd prefer to use an import because right now the names of the files are meaningless..

And it won't even allow me to explore to view the contents of the file. Any tips? Thanks!

done all this and still no photos. keeps coming up to trust the computer and I answer yes.

Also, if your I-Phone prompts you to "Trust this Device" , select "Trust". Sometimes this prompt takes a minute to appear on the phone.

Don't work for me even when phone is not in locked / standby mode. I already backed up photos before using this method and it worked fine, then I wanted to do it over again and this time it only copied the pics that had not been compied before, but I wanted to copy all of them again cause I deleted the old backup from my pc so I need to back them up again, but all I get is "No new pictures or videos were found on this device"

Did you try navigating to "Apple iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM" (rather than doing an import)?
# Brabs 2014-10-09 21:07
Nevermind! It suddenly worked. Thanks!

Same as Steve Snow - I unlocked my phone, plugged into my PC and still get the "there are no new photos to import" message. In fact, there are no files at all. Any solution?

How do I transfer the pictures from "my pictures" back onto the iphone camera roll? Everytime I try, it says to "copy to root of storage" (hovering over internal storage)
